Texas’ First Super Street ~ 411 on 281

I attended a meeting this week to find out what’s happening at the Hwy 281 & Loop 1604 intersection.  There have been stories, rumors, proposals, suits, and years of controversy surrounding this booming NC location in San Antonio.  Terry Brechtel, Director of the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority presented a brief history and current plans for the intersection.  The first order of business to ease the commute for motorists, Texas’ first Super Street!

As I understand the Super Street, the feeder roads north of 1604 such as Encino Rd. and Evans Rd. will have a new traffic flow when intersecting with Hwy 281.  Drivers traveling west on the feeder roads towards Hwy 281 will no longer be able to travel straight, or turn left at the signal.  Instead, travelers will all turn right, which is north, and proceed to the nearest turn-a-round to head south.

My first thought…”that sounds like a hassle.”  My second thought…”just think of how much more traffic all of that retail will get!”  So my real estate self immediately won over my driver self.  And according to Ms. Brechtal, the Super Street will reduce drive time for those commuters by 10 – 12 minutes, each way.

Now keep in mind that this is a temporary solution until the required 3-5 year environmental studies are completed and more permanent solutions are approved.  But the Super Street is a proven, cost effective, and timely approach to an immediate need.   And it will be the first in Texas.

The Alamo RMA recently produced some animated videos to help us understand the Super Street traffic flow.  I am posting an example below, but more examples and information can be found at The 411 on 281.

This video tracks a drive from Evans Rd. heading west toward Hwy. 281.

The Alamo RMA is working hard to communicate their plans with City residents.  If you’re interested in staying informed or would like to participate in this development, Alamo RMA is hosting a community open house June 30th at the Summit Christian Center Main Entrance at 2575 Marshall Road, San Antonio, Texas starting at 6 p.m.  Members of the community are invited to view and comment on the proposed project schematic.

Dr. Karl Eschbach, Texas State Demographer

Early in the year I was able to catch up with Dr. Karl Eschbach, State Demographer and  Director of the Texas State Data Center. We spent about thirty minutes together discussing Texas demographics, Bexar County trends, and the upcoming 2010 Census.  I must say, there could not have been a better guest for our first podcast.   Dr. Eschbach was a good sport and truly provided for great conversation on where our City and State may be headed.   Please click on this link to hear the complete podcast.
